Rob Abel

Rob Abel has served as CEO of IMS Global Learning Consortium (rebranded to 1EdTech in 2022) for over two decades, guiding the organization from a small standards body into one of the most influential forces in education technology.

Under Abel's leadership, IMS Global developed and maintained several foundational specifications — but none more impactful than Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI). Abel recognized early that the future of educational technology wasn't monolithic LMS platforms but ecosystems of specialized tools, and LTI provided the connective tissue to make those ecosystems work.

Abel championed the evolution from LTI 1.0's basic launch (2010) through the transformative LTI 1.3 and LTI Advantage release (2019), which rebuilt the security model on modern standards (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, signed JWTs) and introduced Deep Linking, Assignment and Grade Services, and Names and Role Provisioning Services.

Beyond LTI, Abel's organization created Common Cartridge (content portability), QTI (assessment interoperability), Caliper Analytics (learning data), and CASE (competency frameworks). His strategic vision positioned IMS Global/1EdTech as the standards body for higher education, complementing ADL's focus on government and defense training.

Abel also pioneered the certification model that gave 1EdTech's standards teeth. Unlike SCORM, where conformance testing was optional and often ignored, 1EdTech's certification program required vendors to pass rigorous conformance tests before claiming compliance — raising the overall quality of implementations across the industry.

The 2022 rebrand to 1EdTech signaled Abel's broader ambition: making education technology work as a unified ecosystem, not a collection of disconnected tools.
