Claude Ostyn
Learning Standards Strategist / SCORM Cookbook Author
Click2Learn (Asymetrix)
Claude Ostyn was one of the most prolific and respected contributors in the history of eLearning standards. As Learning Standards Strategist at Click2Learn (formerly Asymetrix), he was part of the technical consultants team that helped in the genesis of the SCORM specifications — working alongside Philip Dodds and others to solve the fundamental problems of reusability and interoperability that SCORM was designed to address.
Ostyn was a vigorous and active participant in the work of AICC, ADL SCORM, IEEE LTSC, and IMS Global. His name appears as a contributor and reviewer on countless documents, white papers, specifications, and ballot comments across all four organizations. Few individuals in the eLearning standards world contributed so broadly and so deeply across so many parallel efforts.
His most widely known contribution was the SCORM Cookbook — formally titled the "SCORM 1.2 Resource Kit" — which became one of the most popular and practical references for developers implementing SCORM. The Cookbook included "Cooking Up a SCORM" (a developer guide), a SCORM 1.2 overview, and "In the Eye of the SCORM" — resources that demystified the specification for thousands of developers. Rustici Software later republished the Cookbook for its enduring educational value.
Before his standards work, Ostyn had a remarkably diverse background. He held degrees in Film and Video and Education (from Stanford), worked as an artist in schools, and did commercial and ethnographic video production in Alaska. At Asymetrix/Click2Learn, he directed the design of an advanced hypertext help system, added multimedia widgets to ToolBook, and designed ToolBook CBT Edition — the first eLearning authoring tool to use wizards, templates, and smart, context-sensitive objects rather than coding and flowcharts. ToolBook CBT Edition later evolved into Click2Learn Instructor.
Ostyn passed away in 2007 after a battle with terminal illness. The eLearning community mourned his loss deeply. The IEEE LTSC's Reusable Competencies Definition working group dedicated their specification to his memory — a fitting tribute to someone who had given so much to the standards that underpin modern eLearning.
Claude Ostyn exemplified the kind of selfless, deeply technical, cross-organizational contributor without whom standards simply do not happen. He worked not for recognition but because he believed interoperability mattered.
